Dysautonomia Virtual Superhero 5K
Join us for our 4th annual Superhero Virtual 5k
How does a virtual race work?
In a virtual race, you can participate anywhere, at any time, and with anyone. First, register for the race here on Eventbrite by registering either as an individual or a team. Then select a ticket that is right for the participant(s) by choosing your DSN Virtual 5K Superhero t-shirt size(s), which is included in your order. You can also register your pet as a participant by selecting "superhero pet medal", which includes a silver plated "race medal" charm for your pets' collar or service vest.
You can run, walk, or roll all or part of the distance with a team in your area or you can complete your distance in your own neighborhood, a treadmill, or even underwater. A virtual race allows you to split your distance into multiple segments and go your own pace. Use a free app like Google fit to track your distance. Create a team and walk together with your fellow Dysautonomia Support Network Members. It's a great way to meet new friends. A virtual race gives you the flexibility to participate, get in shape, and support the Dysautonomia Support Network in a way that works best for you and your abilities.
Do I have to run the 5k all at one time?
No. A virtual race allows you to split your distance into multiple segments and go your own pace. It's a great way to meet new friends. Join a team in your area or create your own. You can walk with your fellow Dysautonomia Support Network chapter members, family or friends.
How can I complete the 5K?
You can run, walk or roll anywhere, even underwater at a pace that is right for you. Participants of the superhero virtual 5K focus on what we CAN do! The distance can be completed in as many segments as you need to complete the distance. Some superheroes from previous years have tracked their steps at PT, during short walks in their homes, on a recumbent elliptical or have met up with others in the area and walk together at a local park.
Can you walk up and down your hallway a few times a day? That's great! Maybe water walk in Aqua Physical Therapy. That's equally as important. This is all about empowerment, setting goals and adapting to reach those goals. If even these suggestions seem too physical right now, you can still be a superhero by organizing a local walk or by being a team captain and finding racers for your team while you focus on fundraising to benefit Dysautonomia Support Network patient programs.
What if I am unable to run?
A virtual race gives you the flexibility to participate, get in shape, and support the Dysautonomia Support Network in a way that works best for you and your abilities. You can run, roll, or walk all or part of your distance at an event in your area or you can complete your distance in your own neighborhood, or even on a treadmill. If that seems too physical right now, you can still be a superhero by organizing a local event or by being a team captain and finding participants for your team while you focus on fundraising to benefit Dysautonomia Support Network patient programs.
Can children and pets participate?
Yes, we would love to have as many children participate as possible, as DSN values family. Youth registrations are available for a reduced fee of $20, which also include a 2019 Superhero 5k t-shirt. Even our pet friends can be registered at a reduced fee of $15 per pet and receive a DSN pet charm for their participation. We are all in this together!
Do participants have to have dysautonomia or other illnesses to participate?
No. Each year, participants consist of adults and children living with dysautonomia, EDS and their friends, family, health care providers as well as other advocates from the rare community.
How should I track my distance?
There are many free apps to assist you with tracking. We like Google Fit, but you're welcome to use any app or device you're used to.
How do I find others to walk or run with, in my area or start a team?
Register now as an individual or create a team to walk with family or friends. Join the Superhero 5K Virtual Race Facebook Group to find others in your area to join your team! You can also visit our NOVA Dysautonomia Awareness Fun Walk Facebook Event Page for information on DSN's October 20th event in Bluemont, Virginia.
How can I help raise money for the Dysautonomia Support Network?
Once you have registered for the 5K and shared your story, you can share your page with others on all your social media platforms and encourage them to click the "DONATE NOW" button. These funds will help to support all the amazing things that DSN does throughout the year to benefit its members and the community at large.
How can I get a souvenir DSN Superhero Virtual 5K Medal?
If you are purchasing a regular ticket that includes a T-shirt then after you click "Order Now" during checkout you may choose to purchase the "DSN Superhero Medal Add On Item" for $15.
